Product Expert Angela Yamaoka helps you understand the differences and similarities for your hospital.

Hi, I’m Angela.

I’m a product specialist at Mother’s Choice Products

You might be thinking about buying a hospital grade pump for your institution or for your rental depot, and you’re trying to decide which one might be the right fit for your particular needs.

So let’s talk about some of the things that are the same with the Ameda Platinum and the Newest pump – the Pearl, and some of the things that are different.

What’s The Same

You can see the collection kit is the same and is unique to Ameda, it is the original closed system and has a solid barrier to protect breastmilk from the transfer of virus, bacteria, and other contaminants. The collection kit is simple for the parent to clean as there are only 4 parts that need regular cleaning. Every Ameda Kit is compatible with all different types of Ameda pumps regardless of using at hospital or at home. This makes inventory management a breeze.

Hospitals have a choice between a Length of stay, or Single patient use kit, and they come in double or single options. That makes training your staff so simple. One kit fits all.

Both pumps fit on a trolly to increase portability within the hospital. Both pumps are appropriate for Rental depots.

Now for the differences:

The Pearl has a rechargeable battery, whereas the platinum has to be plugged in. That is a very important things to note.

The Pearl is much smaller and lighter because it utilizes the most recent diaphragm technology. The Pearl uses the internal diaphragm to create suction whereas the Platinum uses a circular Piston to drive the motor.

What sets them apart and why should you choose one over the other? The Ameda Pearl absolutely wins in portability because it’s so lightweight.

When you turn on the Pearl, you’ll see that it comes on in stimulation mode. So this is something you are probably very familiar with. At two minutes it auto switches to expression, but you can also automatically switch it by pushing the mode button. The suction is adjustable in the stimulation or expression mode. The suction goes to a maximum of approximately 250 mmHg.

The parent also has the option to adjust the speed as needed in expression mode, up to a maximum speed of 120 cpm. There is the back lit LED lighting, the same as you have on the platinum. And there’s also a really cool night light that illuminates the handle. So if you’re using it at night, it’s a very soft light that will help when they’re pumping

The Pearl easy to use , and it also comes with this amazing redesigned case, which is lightweight, super portable, and just makes life carrying a pump so much easier. It also has space to store the collection kit. The Ameda Pearl Breast Pump has been awarded the Breast Pump Product the Year for 2024 by the independent body called the Baby Innovation Awards.

Why choose the Platinum? The Platinum would be a really great choice because of its proven record.

The platinum has 5,000 different combinations that you can use and it has independently adjustable speed and suction. When you turn the platinum on, you can see there are three screens. So this is the speed, this is the suction, and this is the timer that tells you how long you’ve been pumping.

The speed levels are customizable up to 80 cycles per minute and the suction is increased in in increments of 1 to 10 % up to 100% or approximately 250 mmHg.

In 2012 there was a study by Larkin et al that showed milk volumes up to 1000 ml by day 14 for premature babies using the Platinum pump. At the time of this video the Ameda Pearl is currently undergoing a clinical study which centers on exclusively pumping mothers of premature babies using the Ameda Pearl breast pump. The initial findings regarding effective milk production within the first 14 days are very promising and show early signs of class-leading levels of milk production. The study is expected to be completed in the coming months.

Both pumps have built-in bottle holders, so you never have to worry about your milk bottles tipping over. They both use the same tubing type of port. The Pearl has a cover that goes over the front of it. Both pumps come with a 3 year warranty so you can feel confident that if anything goes wrong we have you covered.

If you are looking for the gold standard of pumps you can look to Ameda Pearl and Ameda Platinum backed with over 80 years of experience and research.

If you’re looking for a pump that is versatile, can be used at home, can be used in any place in the hospital and has a rechargeable battery, the Pearl is a really great option for you. It’s perfect for rental depots because of its portability.
